A gravel driveway can look fine from the gate and still be failing underneath. Potholes, washboarding, standing water, soft edges, and gravel pushed into the grass are signs that the road has lost its shape. Knowing how to grade gravel driveways means more than dragging a blade down the middle. The goal is to restore a firm driving surface, move water off the road, and keep the stone where it belongs.

Start With the Road’s Drainage, Not the Gravel
Water is the main reason gravel driveways break down. When rain sits in the wheel tracks, traffic pushes the stone into the soft base below it. A few shallow ruts become potholes, then the road starts holding more water every time it rains.
Before equipment goes on the driveway, look at where water enters, crosses, and exits the road. Check low spots, culvert crossings, ditches, pond edges, driveway entrances, and areas shaded by heavy vegetation. If runoff has nowhere to go, fresh gravel alone will not fix the problem.
A driveway needs a clear path for water to leave the surface. That may mean cleaning roadside ditches, restoring shallow swales, opening blocked culvert ends, or installing a properly sized culvert where water crosses the drive. On flat Florida ground, even a small improvement in drainage can make a major difference in how long the road holds up.
Be careful not to cut ditches so deep that they become unsafe or difficult to maintain. The right drainage layout depends on the property, soil, driveway elevation, and where the water naturally wants to travel. A road running beside a pasture or through low woods needs a different approach than a short residential drive on higher ground.
How to Grade Gravel Driveways With the Right Crown
The center of a gravel driveway should sit slightly higher than both edges. This shape is called a crown, and it lets rain shed to the sides instead of collecting in the tire paths. For most drives, a crown of roughly one-half inch per foot from the center toward each edge is enough to move water without making the road feel steep or awkward to drive on.
The exact amount depends on the width of the driveway and the traffic using it. A narrow residential drive may need a modest crown. A wider access road carrying trailers, work trucks, tractors, or horse trailers may need more attention to the road base and shoulders so the edges do not collapse under load.
A box blade, land plane, grader blade, or dedicated road grader can rebuild the crown. The operator pulls loose aggregate from the edges and wheel tracks toward the center, then feathers it back out evenly. The work should happen in controlled passes, not one aggressive cut that digs into the base and leaves the driveway loose.
If the driveway has severe potholes, do not simply skim stone across the top. Cut down through the loose material, remove mud and contaminated soil where needed, fill the area with suitable aggregate, and compact it before final grading. Covering a pothole without repairing the soft spot underneath usually means it will return after the next hard rain.
Repair the Base Before Adding Fresh Stone
New gravel is useful when the existing surface is thin, contaminated, or worn away, but it is not a cure-all. A driveway with a weak base can swallow several loads of stone and still remain soft. That is especially common in wet ground, on roads built directly over sand, or where heavy trucks regularly travel.
A dependable gravel driveway has layers. The lower layer provides strength and spreads the load. The top layer provides a smoother driving surface and helps lock everything together. In many cases, crushed limerock, road base, or a similar compactable aggregate works well for the structural layer. A smaller crushed stone or finish material may be used on top, depending on the desired surface and local availability.
Avoid using smooth, round river rock as the main driveway material. It does not interlock well, tends to roll under tires, and is difficult to grade into a stable surface. Material with fines is often more suitable for the base because it compacts into a firmer layer. Too many fines, however, can create muddy conditions when drainage is poor. The right material depends on the road’s use and the ground below it.
For soft or persistently wet sections, excavation may be necessary before rebuilding the driveway. Removing unsuitable material, installing separation fabric where appropriate, placing a thicker compacted base, and correcting drainage can save money over repeatedly patching the same stretch of road. This is where commercial equipment and an experienced operator matter. A tractor with a blade can handle routine maintenance, but major base failure is an earthwork problem.
Grade in the Right Direction and at the Right Time
The best time to grade is when the material is slightly damp, not soaked and not powder-dry. A little moisture helps aggregate move and compact. Working a saturated driveway can create ruts, pull up the base, and make soft areas worse. Grading extremely dry material may create dust and leave loose stone that does not bind well.
Start at the high end of the driveway and work toward the outlet for water. Maintain the crown through the full length of the road rather than creating a raised center in only a few places. Pay close attention to transitions near gates, garages, paved roads, culverts, and turnarounds. Those areas receive extra tire traffic and often need a stronger base.
Do not push all the gravel to the edge of the driveway. This is a common mistake with light, repeated blade passes. Once stone is thrown into the grass or ditch line, the road becomes narrower and water is more likely to settle in the travel lanes. Pull displaced material back toward the center before adding more aggregate.
After shaping the driveway, compact it. Traffic will provide some compaction over time, but a roller gives a better result, particularly after adding new base material or repairing deep holes. Compaction is what turns freshly placed stone into a road surface that can carry weight instead of shifting under it.
Protect the Edges and Problem Areas
Driveway edges take a beating from turning vehicles, trailers, delivery trucks, and equipment leaving the road to pass or park. When the shoulder is lower than the road surface, the edge can break away. When it is higher, it can trap water on the driveway. The shoulder should support the edge while still allowing water to drain away.
Low crossings, culvert locations, shaded wet spots, and sharp turns deserve extra attention. These are usually the first areas to show damage. If one section repeatedly washes out, look upstream for the real cause. A plugged culvert, a ditch that has filled with leaves and sediment, or runoff from a roof or higher field may be directing water straight onto the road.
Vegetation control also helps preserve access. Brush, palmettos, low limbs, and roadside growth can block ditches, hide soft shoulders, and keep the road from drying after rain. Keeping the corridor mowed and cleared gives you room to maintain drainage and makes the driveway safer for guests, livestock trailers, work crews, and emergency access.

Light washboarding and minor loose gravel may be manageable with the right tractor attachment and a careful approach.
